GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A new interactive sports shop is making its debut in the West Valley this week!
Dick’s Sporting Goods is bringing its first Arizona House of Sport location to Glendale. The new store, located near the Loop 101 and Maryland Avenue, features an outdoor track and turf field for training, a rock-climbing wall, golf hitting bays, a putting green and a HitTrax cage.
Customers can shop for the latest sports gear and also test it through interactive activities, designed for all ages and skill levels.
“What an exciting moment for Glendale and the entire state of Arizona,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers. “We’re proud to be home to the very first DICK’S House of Sport. Glendale keeps leading the way — attracting top-tier experiential retail businesses, fun experiences, and great opportunities for our residents and visitors.”
The grand opening will be at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17. To kick off the celebration, the first 100 adults in line each morning on opening weekend will receive a mystery gift card. The first 300 kids ages 10 and up will receive a free 30-ounce Stanley Quencher.
Phoenix Suns shooting guard Jalen Green will also stop by the new shop on Saturday, followed by Diamondbacks fan-favorite Corbin Carroll on Sunday. Fans can get both stars’ autographs from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day.
Fans will have to jump in line early, as autograph wristbands will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. The athletes will only be signing official player cards provided by the store.
The company plans to open 16 new House of Sport stores nationwide in 2025, eventually expanding to 75-100 locations by 2027.

GLENDALE, AZ — Those awaiting the opening of the much-anticipated VAI Resort in Glendale may have to wait a little longer, according to new information from resort officials.
The resort’s estimated opening date has changed multiple times since the massive project broke ground near State Farm Stadium in 2021.
They previously anticipated a “late 2023 opening,” but in April 2025, the goal was to open in phases in “late 2025.”
Then, it was estimated that the resort would open in 2026.
However, as of September 2025, VAI officials now say, they "are not ready to provide a specific opening date."
VAI officials say they expect to announce a specific date "approximately 9-12 months in advance of opening," signaling that the wait for the resort could be even longer.

"We are not ready to provide a specific opening date. When we open will be a function of how much of the resort will be operational for a VAI-worthy guest experience. We anticipate making a specific date announcement approximately 9-12 months in advance of opening, with concert tickets and/or hotel rooms on-sale prior to opening."
ABC15 asked Berk Communications what factors have led to the opening date changes, but they did not provide those details.
In early October, ABC15 reached out to city officials about the project.
The Glendale City Manager’s Office said, "The developer has shared a number of potential enhancements to the project. Since this project first was envisioned, they have continually added project components that have grown the scope of the resort. Whether additional scope changes are put into motion is a question best answered by the developer. But to date, they have an excellent track record in delivering scope enhancements to the resort."
VAI Resort’s plans for the billion-dollar project include hotels, entertainment venues, dining and lounge options, group meeting spaces, event space, retail, and more.
The area's upcoming Mattel Adventure Park, which has also experienced several opening date changes, was also anticipated to open this year.
The latest information on the park's progress was not immediately available, and the park did not respond to inquiries regarding updates or whether VAI's changes have impacted them.

Maricopa County, City of Glendale, and Mercy Housing leaders recently celebrated the Grand Opening of The Cascalote, a newly constructed 148-unit affordable housing community designed specifically for seniors in the West Valley.
“Seniors on fixed incomes across Maricopa County are finding it harder to afford housing,” said Supervisor Kate Brophy McGee, Vice Chair of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 3. “Developments like The Cascalote provide these seniors comfort and stability. Best of all, they can remain part of their community.”
Located on a 4.4-acre site in Glendale, The Cascalote offers 148 affordable apartments for seniors exiting homelessness or living with disabilities, with priority given to veterans. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved $9.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds in April 2022 to support the project’s land acquisition, predevelopment, and construction costs.
“We are thrilled to open The Cascalote and provide 148 new affordable homes for seniors in Glendale,” said Shelly Marquez, President, Mercy Housing Mountain Plains. “This is an exciting milestone for Mercy Housing Mountain Plains, and we are thankful to our partners at Maricopa County and the City of Glendale for making this development a reality!”
Inspired by the evergreen tree known for its yellow flowers, The Cascalote symbolizes resilience and hope. Eligible residents can choose from studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, with rents ranging from $963 to $1,389 per month for households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). All units are fully accessible to ensure comfort, safety, and dignity.
Located in Glendale, at the northwest corner of 49th Avenue and Glenn Drive, The Cascalote features amenities and support services, including a bocce court, dog park, on-site laundry, fitness center, community room with kitchen, picnic areas with grills, community garden, and navigation services to help residents successfully transition out of homelessness and thrive.

GLENDALE, AZ — Mensho is gearing up to open its third location, according to the Office of Economic Development for the city of Glendale.
“Glendale is honored to be home to the first Mensho in the West Valley,” said Mayor Jerry P. Weiers, in a news release sent to ABC15. “Their investment speaks volumes about Glendale’s reputation as a vibrant and growing destination for diverse and exciting restaurants.”
The Westgate location was originally scheduled to host its grand opening on October 11, but officials now tell ABC15 that the opening has been delayed until November.
This restaurant will be the chain's third Valley storefront.

Desert Diamond Arena security
All guests will be searched and have their belongings scanned. Desert Diamond Arena may confiscate items that could cause danger or disruption or are in breach of building policies.
Guests are subject to a metal-detector screening, visual inspection and bag inspection. To increase the efficiency of the process:
Guests may be subject to a secondary hand wand screening and/or visual inspection. Any guest who declines to be searched may be denied entry.
Weapons are prohibited Desert Diamond Arena
Guns and other weapons are prohibited at Desert Diamond Arena. The arena does not provide lockers and will not check weapons at Guest Services.
Weapons include but are not limited to firearms (pursuant to A.R.S § 4-229), explosives, stun guns, handcuffs, brass knuckles, sticks, clubs, batons, martial arts instruments, pepper spray, tear gas, knives, etc.
Guests with such an item will be asked to remove it from the arena or dispose of it. Guests who refuse to comply will be ejected and may be subject to arrest.

Can I bring my pet to Desert Diamond Arena?
Pets of any kind are prohibited in Desert Diamond Arena. Trained service animals and service animals in training are welcome and must be under control of the handler.
Service animals will rest in the seating area of the guest with a disability and not in the aisle. A guest whose service animal poses a threat to the safety of other guests or employees may be asked to escort the animal off the property.

Is Desert Diamond Arena cashless?
Desert Diamond Arena is cashless. Cash is not accepted in the arena or for parking.
Desert Diamond Arena lost and found
Lost items may be claimed at the Guest Services Center across from Section 115 during an event. During nonevent hours, items can be claimed at Gate 3 security or by calling 623-772-3475. Items will be retained for two weeks. After that, they may be donated to charity.

Desert Diamond Arena parking lots open one hour prior to the door time. Parking is available in lots G, J, L, Yellow, Garage, South VIP, East VIP or West VIP.
Parking costs $15-$75 depending on location.
Prepaid parking provides expedited entry and exit, close proximity to the arena and guaranteed parking until 30 minutes after the event start time.
Prepaid parking can be purchased through parkwhiz.com up to one hour prior to the event.
Guests with prepaid parking should follow the directions to the specific parking lot. Guests without prepaid parking can pay with credit cards only. Cash is not accepted.
Prepaid parking passes are for one regular 12-foot by 18-foot parking space. Oversized vehicles must pay for as many spaces as the vehicle will occupy.
Desert Diamond Arena does not permit overnight parking.
